Vijayadashami, also known as Dussehra, is one of India’s most celebrated festivals that signifies the eternal triumph of good over evil. Observed on the tenth day of the bright fortnight of Ashwin (September–October), it follows the nine auspicious days of Navratri.
Mythological Significance
Lord Rama’s Victory over Ravana: The Ramayana narrates how Lord Rama killed the demon king Ravana on this day, establishing the power of dharma (righteousness).
Durga’s Triumph over Mahishasura: Another legend highlights Goddess Durga’s fierce battle, where she destroyed the demon Mahishasura, symbolizing the destruction of arrogance and evil.
Celebrations Across India
Ramlila & Ravana Dahan (North India) – Theatrical plays narrating the life of Lord Rama are performed, ending with the burning of huge effigies of Ravana, Meghnath, and Kumbhkaran.
Durga Visarjan (Eastern India) – In West Bengal, Assam, and Odisha, Vijayadashami marks the conclusion of Durga Puja. Idols of Goddess Durga are immersed in rivers and seas with music, dance, and devotional chants.
Ayudha Puja (South India) – Worship of tools, books, weapons, and instruments takes place, showing respect towards knowledge and livelihood.
Shami Puja & Exchange of Leaves (Western India) – In Maharashtra, people exchange Shami leaves, symbolizing prosperity and blessings.

Vijayadashami teaches that:
