Perched atop a hill in the ancient town of Osian, Rajasthan, the Sachiya Mata Temple is one of the most revered shrines for both Hindu and Jain devotees. Originally built in the 8th century CE and reconstructed in the 12th century, the temple is a captivating blend of history, spirituality, and architectural brilliance.
A Sacred Approach<\/strong>
Pilgrims approach the temple through a series of exquisitely sculpted arches lining a long flight of steps. Once open to the sky, this entrance is now partially covered, but it still sets the tone for the grandeur that awaits within.

The garbhagriha (sanctum) enshrines the idol of Goddess Sachiya Mata, accompanied by images of other Hindu deities. The outer walls and smaller shrines are adorned with detailed stone carvings. A striking sculpture of Varaha, the boar incarnation of Lord Vishnu, greets visitors in the northern complex. On the eastern side, statues of Lord Vishnu, Goddess Lakshmi, and other deities add to the divine aura. Surrounding the main shrine are nine subsidiary temples, each dedicated to a different form of the goddess.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Goddess and Legends<\/strong>
The temple honors Sachiya Mata, believed to be the daughter of demon king Pauloma, the wife of Indra, the rain god, and the ninth incarnation of Goddess Durga. According to legend, Indra was so captivated by her beauty that he married her.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Rituals and Devotion<\/strong>
The temple remains a bustling center of devotion. Pilgrims offer lapsi (a sweet dish), saffron, and sandalwood to the goddess. For members of the Bafna Jain community, this shrine holds special importance as a venue for auspicious ceremonies, including mundan (head shaving rituals) and post-marriage prayers.
